International soccer star Wayne Rooney has agreed to be the next head coach of D.C. United, according to ESPN, returning to the American soccer outfit where he once played.
Rooney, 36, played for D.C. United from July 2018 to Oct. 2019, notching 25 goals in 52 appearances. The club announced the hire at a press conference Tuesday.
Rooney began managing at Derby County in the middle of the 2020-21 campaign and helped the club avoid relegation from England's second tier. However, in his second season at the club, a 23rd finish in the EFL Championship saw them relegated and Rooney resign after the season.
He replaces Chad Ashton, who's been the interim manager since the firing of Hernan Losada in April. D.C. United trails the Eastern Conference with a record of 5-2-10, tied with Chicago for a league-worst 17 points.
ESPN further reports that while Rooney has agreed to the contract terms, he will join the club "once the final details are worked out and he acquires the necessary work visa."
