The Nationals traded Lane Thomas to the Guardians for a trio of prospects on Monday in a move that wasn’t too surprising given the state of the organization, but a move that still left Bish “bummed” when reacting with the rest of the Sports Junkies on Tuesday morning.
“I’m bummed about it. I was hoping for weeks that [Mike Rizzo] wouldn’t trade him, but he’s gone,” Bish said.
Thomas has just eight home runs on the year but has swiped 28 bags, and Cleveland valued that speed, sending over three prospects including lefty Alex Clemmey, the team’s eighth-ranked prospect according to MLB.com. They also parted with Jose Tena and Rafael Ramirez Jr.
“Cleveland doesn’t like to give up prospects. They’re very tight when it comes to that,” Bish said. “But they gave up three for Lane Thomas. He gone.
Apparently [Clemmey] was pitching very well. He’s a fireballer…I’m just bummed. Maybe Rizz just figured that Lane Thomas has been in the league seven years, he had an injury this year…doesn’t have any pops, but when he gets on base, he’s a threat to steal. But if you’re gonna get a three-for-one, including a pitcher who is a top-10 prospect for Cleveland…I get it.”
