Report: Nationals to call up 1B/3B Andres Chaparro Tuesday

The Nationals’ youth movement is set to continue, as WaPo’s Andrew Godlen is reporting that the Nats will call up infielder Andres Chaparro ahead of Tuesday’s revival of the Beltway Battle in Baltimore.

Chaparro, 25, was acquired from Arizona for Dylan Floro at the deadline, and is slashing .328/.405/.572 with 23 home runs and 85 RBI in 105 Triple-A games between Reno and Rochester.

A third baseman by trade, Chaparro has played both corner infield spots over his career, which began in 2016 in the Yankees organization.
The Bombers signed him out of Venezuela as an international free agent in 2015 and he spent eight-plus years in the organization, coming stateside in 2017 and reaching as high as Triple-A in 2023.

He repeated that level after signing with the Diamondbacks as a minor-league free agent last winter, and came to Washington for Floro a few weeks ago.

The Nationals have space on their 40-man roster, so they’ll just need to make a move on their 26-man roster to find room for Chaparro. They also called up Jose Tena – who was acquired from Cleveland at the trade deadline – last weekend and have deployed him at third base, but Chaparro could also get at-bats as the DH or spell Juan Yepez at first as well. Tena is a shortstop by trade, so he could also slide over there if CJ Abrams’ back continues to act up.
