Saints cornerback Malcolm Jenkins is doing his part to ensure election workers stay nourished.
The veteran NFL star said he donated lunch to Philadelphia poll workers on Friday, amid the ongoing counting of votes in the hotly contested swing state. The food was served to around 300 workers, according to ESPN reporter Tim McManus.
Jenkins on social media said that poll workers were "essential workers" and had been working "non-stop," and that the job of counting votes "essential to our democracy."
Jenkins, now in his second stint with the team that drafted him following a six-year run with the Eagles, said the food was prepared by local minority-owned businesses.
The 32-year-old Ohio State product was been one of the leading voices for social and racial justice among NFL players in recent years, and was active in voter registration initiatives and raising awareness about voter suppression.
The three-time Pro Bowler returned to New Orleans in the offseason on a four-year deal after his departure from Philadelphia amid an apparent salary cap squeeze.
Pittsburgh Steelers players made a similar gesture for poll workers in Allegheny County.
