In recent years, the Maryland Terrapins' success in football has always been fleeting, Stewart Mandel wrote recently in The Athletic. So how can the Terps, now in their tenth season after leaving the ACC, change their reputation and alter the narrative in the Big Ten? (And how the elimination of the divisions in the conference in football can help.)

To get to the bottom of things, Kevin Sheehan spoke with Mandel about how Mike Locksley and Maryland can survive as mid-Atlantic underdogs in the conference of the midwest.

Known for basketball, Sheehan and Mandel talk about the decent runs the Terps have historically had in football despite being known and thought of as one of the only basketball-first schools in the conference. They also discuss if Maryland could ever get back to a Top 25-type football school as they did recently under Ralph Friedgen in the early 2000s and the early 1980s.

A big question: Can Maryland adapt to the new world of NIL when the historical success of the program is built upon keeping talented local players from the region at home?

There is plenty of talk about fan apathy, UCLA and USC joining the Big Ten, the nature of the Terps' athletic program, and much more. Listen to the full conversation on the player above.
