Since his arrival two months ago, we’ve seen a new side of LSU head coach Brian Kelly, who has bizarrely developed a Southern accent while gaining an appreciation for TikTok, even going as far as to dance with prospective recruits. Doing his best to embody the Steve Buscemi “How do you do, fellow kids?” meme, the 60-year-old starred in a video last week, cutting up a rug with four-star prospect Danny Lewis.

Lewis, a 6’5” tight end out of New Iberia, Louisiana (about an hour drive from LSU’s main campus), announced Wednesday he plans to attend Alabama next fall, choosing the Tide over scholarship offers from Arizona State, Cincinnati, Colorado, Colorado State, East Carolina, Florida, Houston, Indiana, Liberty, Louisiana, Louisiana Tech, LSU, Marshall, Memphis, New Mexico, Purdue, South Alabama, Southern Mississippi, Texas State, Tulane, Utah and Virginia.

Call it a case of the rich getting richer with Lewis joining what was already one of the nation’s top recruiting classes (second in the country, according to 247 Sports’ composite rankings). Cringeworthy as his embarrassing dance moves were, Kelly’s viral stunt arguably served its purpose, shining a light on the program by garnering over eight million views on Twitter. Still, that didn’t stop the internet from piling on, mocking Kelly for losing a coveted recruit and native Louisianan to a conference rival.

Kelly’s defection to LSU generated significant controversy this fall, leaving many in South Bend feeling betrayed. The former Notre Dame coach was hired to replace Ed Orgeron, who finished 50-21 over his six-year stint in Baton Rouge.
