Many, many names have already emerged as anything from possibilities to dreams as candidates for the Maryland head coaching job, including one man in Duane Simpkins who is both an alum and a local, and also happens to be coaching locally at American.
Whether it’s Simpkins or someone else with some similar cred, though, former Maryland star Walt Williams told Doc Walker Sunday that ideally, that’s exactly what the program needs: an ex-Terp.
And part of that is because, in this era, the program can use something, and someone, to hang their hats on in terms of that tradition.
“We are traditional school, man, so of course, we want to win and do it in a consistent fashion, but at the end of the day, when you look on that bench, especially in this environment where the players go to whoever's going to pay them the most, the coaching staff is something that can be consistent, something that the fans can be familiar with,” Williams said. “I think when you have people in the fold that are alum, and the fans can zone in on and focus on, I think that's huge. I think that would be a tremendous asset for a university like ours.”
