Analyzing Commanders' wide receiver needs for the draft with Lynnell Willingham and Craig Hoffman
The Washington Commanders entered the offseason with some pretty obvious areas of need. But one position, that was seen as a strength, might actually be another area of need: Wide receiver.
That's what Lynnell Willingham believes. "This offense in particular when we're gonna see them deploy three and four wide receivers looks more than the average team in the NFL, I think they need to improve not only the depth, but I think the talent at the top of the room," he said on the Hoffman Show on Wednesday.
"Terry McLaurin is the only sure thing you have right now at wide receiver," Willingham continued, adding that for some reason the veteran and Jahan Dotson "struggled against press-man looks."
While Willingham believes Dotson, who struggled in his second NFL season, should move to the slot, Craig Hoffman disagrees.
"Bottom line is though, that I think they need to add another wide receiver that's going to come in here and contribute," Willingham said, adding that picks No. 36 and No. 40 overall could be spots in the NFL Draft for Adam Peters to go WR. "If they walk away from this draft without selecting a wide receiver at either 36 or 40, I'm gonna lose my mind."
Willingham then floats the idea about moving back into Round 1 to grab a wide receiver – like Brian Thomas Jr. – if a top prospect begins to slide. That's an idea Hoffman would be against "for multiple reasons."
Hoffman sees the Commanders having already invested a lot of money in McLaurin and a high draft pick in Dotson, that packaging more picks to trade up for another wide receiver would be putting too much capital into that position.
