Cam Newton believes he is better than some of the starting quarterbacks in the NFL heading into next season, but the former MVP says he would be willing to return to the league as a backup.
But he would only be willing to back up nine particular quarterbacks, and he revealed which ones he would be willing to play behind on a YouTube video he released on Wednesday.
One of the nine on Newton’s list? Sam Howell and the Commanders.
“There ain't 32 guys who are better than me,” Newton said. “But I also know that I could also be a backup and I'm willing to be a backup.”
Washington was on that list, as Newton mentioned Howell, the Commanders’ likely starter heading into next season. Newton’s list also included the Bears out of the NFC, and the division rival Eagles. The rest of the teams were from the AFC.
Newton also noted he would be willing to back up whoever drafts high-profile quarterbacks like Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud, and Anthony Richardson.
Newton did not play in 2022, but he announced his intent to return to the NFL after throwing at Auburn’s Pro Day.
