Charles Davis not certain Kliff Kingsbury wants to be a head coach again

The Bears have a head coaching vacancy that will become officially official in about 10 days, and to right now, we know that Pete Carroll seems to be interested.

To Lynnell Willingham, the “Kliff Cliff” has been proven to be a fallacy, and if he were Bears GM Ryan Poles, he’d be calling Mr. Kingsbury…and Charles Davis

“What would be interesting is if Kliff is interested and, and I think he would be as an outsider, I wouldn’t be surprised if he were interested in being an OC there, and not necessarily a head coach,” Davis said. “This is the most fun Kliff's had in a long time, I don’t think there's any question about it, because this is what his love is; his love is coaching up the players, drawing up plays, scheming people open. Being a head coach comes with a whole lot of other stuff that after a while can be an onerous chore, so I don't know that he necessarily is seeking it out.”

Of course, money talks, so Davis wouldn’t be surprised if the Benjamins change that narrative, but there might be conditions.

“I'd be a fool to think that the money that they would pay you, that he would just out of hand say no, but I do know that if he's gonna go back in and be a head coach again, I think he's gonna want to try and figure out how to insulate himself to continue to do what he's doing now,” Davis said. "That would be the interesting part, and Chicago's gonna take a look. Whoever Chicago hires, the offensive structure is critical; I don't care if they hire an offensive or a defensive guy, it’s what you put as an offensive structure around Caleb Williams, because there's no question the potential is there.”

It’s been a banner year for rookie QBs, Davis says, and just because the Bears haven’t won since before the Hail Jayden, don’t let Williams’ struggles fool you.

“I know Chicago has collapsed, but you're not going to convince me that Caleb Williams can't be great, because I believe he can,” Davis said. “We're seeing it from Jayden Daniels. Bo Nix has his team on the verge of the playoffs, now we’re seeing Michael Penix get to play, and Drake Maye…a lot of people were dumping on him before the draft, and I never could understand how he became the punching bag. They better take that back, because that young man can play.”
