Chris Rodriguez Jr. joined Chris Russell and Lynnell Willingham on a Windbag Wednesday, of course discussing his breakout game on Sunday as he did on 106.7 The Fan earlier this week – but there was a second fun nugget behind his appearance.
Rodriguez wore No. 23 in that game, as he has his entire Commanders career but will be No. 36 going forward – because HE was the one who approached the team about switching when Lattimore was acquired.
“I saw it yesterday that we picked him up, and I saw the number that he was rocking, and obviously I know who he is: a four-time Pro Bowler, a vet in this situation,” Rodriguez told Chris & Lynnell. “When I saw, I texted the equipment manager like, ‘hey, am I still in 23, what's going on?’ And he was like, ‘well, we'll talk about it tomorrow.”
So Rodriguez looked at all the available numbers, and…
“I was like, none of these numbers are gonna look anywhere as good on him as a 23 would!” Rodriguez laughed. “And he’s a vet and a Pro Bowler and helping our team, so it just seemed right. I talked to him and asked him if he wanted it, and he said yeah, and we had a conversation.”
So what did Rodriguez get for the number, as is usual custom?
“Just know I got enough; for me, it's cool. I'm not the type to break the bank and whatever,” Rodriguez said. “We haven’t talked that much, but I can tel lhe's a good dude, so it's all good.”
