Commanders hiring ex-Panthers GM Scott Fitterer to personnel executive role

According to our pal Ben Standig of The Athletic, the Washington Commanders have hired former Panthers GM Scott Fitterer to a personnel executive role. Per Tom Pelissero of NFL.com, Fitterer will ‘support the front office and scouting departments’ in DC.

Fitterer spent the last three seasons as Carolina’s GM and was fired after the team went 2-15 last season. Prior to that, he spent two decades with the Seahawks, starting as an area scout before moving up to VP of football operation prior to his 2020 departure, and began his NFL career as an area scout for the Giants from 1998-2000.

As our JP Finlay pointed out, Washington now has the last two Panthers GMs in their employ, as Marty Hurney held that post from 2002-12 and then 2017-20 ahead of Fitterer. They have a total of three former GMs in the front office under Adam Peters total, counting his own predecessor, Martin Mayhew.

“It went poorly in Carolina, but that doesn’t mean he can’t do well here, especially with a different title,” Finlay said when announcing the news. “And, he had ties to Dan Quinn in Seattle way back and grinded to climb the front office ladder. Those Seahawks teams really drafted well when he was Director of College Scouting, too.”
