Commanders place Austin Ekeler on IR, add RB Chase Edmonds to practice squad

The Commanders have made an addition to their running back room, signing free agent RB Chase Edmonds to the practice squad.

Washington also signed WR Chris Moore and DE Jalyn Holmes to the active roster to replace RB Austin Ekeler and DE Deatrich Wise Jr., who were placed on injured reserve and will miss the remainder of the season.

Edmonds will hopefully help replace Ekeler, who was Washington’s top pass-catcher out of the backfield last year but tore his Achilles in Thursday’s loss to Green Bay. Edmonds missed all of last season with a knee injury of his own, so his last run came in 2023, when he had 66 touches for 257 yards in 13 games as a reserve.

He did, however, spend three seasons in Arizona (2019-21) with Kliff Kingsbury, and was a key cog in the offense catching balls out of the backfield in 2020-21 – notching 96 catches for 713 yards and four touchdowns in those two seasons.

The team had just one RB on the practice squad, rookie UDFA Donovan Edwards, but in addition to adding Edmonds, they did also work out Demetric Felton, who was with the Commanders in training camp.
