Commanders fire offensive coordinator Scott Turner

The Washington Commanders are parting ways with offensive coordinator Scott Turner after three seasons, sources tell 106.7 The Fan's JP Finlay

"I met with Coach Turner today and informed him that we will be moving in another direction going forward with the offensive coordinator position," head coach Ron Rivera said in a statement. "Unfortunately, we did not live up to the expectations and standard that I expected to see from our offensive unit. I felt it was best for a fresh start at the coordinator position heading into next year."

Turner came to Washington after Rivera was hired in Jan. 2020. Turner spent two previous stints with Rivera on the Carolina Panthers, first as a quality control coach (2011-12) and then as a quarterbacks coach (2018-19).

"I have a tremendous amount of respect for Scott and thanked him for his three years of service to our organization. I wish Scott and his family all the best in the future," Rivera's statement said.

The Commanders ranked 22nd in passing offense, 12th in rushing and 24th in scoring in 2022. Washington's offense also ranked in the bottom third of the league in yards per play and scoring offense in each of Turner's three seasons as coordinator.

Turner had just signed a multi-year contract extension in March of last year that would run through the 2024 season.

Rivera spoke of the job Turner was doing earlier on Tuesday during his end-of-season press conference. The words he offered weren't exactly a ringing endorsement of his offensive coordinator.

"I think Scott did his job, did the things that he tried to do," Rivera told reporters. "We're gonna self-evaluate and go through that process."

Turner's father, Norv, was the head coach of the Washington Redskins from 1994-2000.

No other coaching changes have been made on the Commanders staff
