Commanders guard Nick Allegretti talks offensive line, training camp life with Chris Russell

After playing 74 regular season games over five years with the Kansas City Chiefs, Nick Allegretti knows what a successful season from start to finish looks like, as he won three Super Bowl rings already in his short career. After signing with the Washington Commanders this offseason, what is it like to experience his first non-Andy Reid training camp?

"It's been a great training camp. Really, really enjoyed the way [Dan Quinn] takes care of his players," Allegretti told Chris Russell after Tuesday morning's practice.

"The competitive aspect of practice is awesome. Everything has a purpose a reason, it's not just 10, 20 play drives. It's a moving ball period or it's four-minute, two-minute, there's a competitive edge to it a lot," he continued. "And we've thrown in some second down drills, some third down drills, some really cool competitive aspects. And I like the way we're competing."

While Allegretti admits that Reid claims to run the hardest training camp in the NFL, he likes the one Quinn has run in Washington because while "the practices might be a tick shorter, when we're on the field it's a lot of intense and fast-paced working. And, we also have a pretty veteran group that we've gotten really good practices when we're not full-pad, which is sometimes a challenge."

He said: "We've gotten good work every day that we're out here."

While the offensive line looks to build chemistry from the top unit, Allegretti says that the mixing and matching of training camp is about getting the entire unit – the full o-line room - onto the same page.

"Every guy in that room has a really important part, wherever that part is, it's extremely important whether it's the backup center, you gotta be giving [Tyler Biadasz] as much advice as you can," he said. "Seeing blitzes, if you're seeing any pre-alignment stuff."

And Allegretti said that getting the chance to work with many different tackles in camp – due to injury and rotation – "we've gotten a really good mix of guys so we all know how each other play, know how each other communicates."

"I think that's big because at some point, this season, whatever the starting five is Week 1, it's gonna be different at some point," he said. "Whether it's for one week or two weeks, it's gonna change and we gotta be ready for that."
