Commanders DT Jonathan Allen feared to have torn pec that will cost him the season

Some huge and potentially crushing news for the Commanders: per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network and confirmed by our Grant Paulsen, DT Jonathan Allen is feared to have suffered a torn pectoral muscle that will require season-ending surgery.

Allen is, per Pelissero, getting a second opinion on the injury, which occurred on Derrick Henry’s seven-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Allen was down on the field in pain, grabbing at the left side of his chest, and he was quickly ruled out after coming off the field.

Allen, a first-round pick in 2017, had 15 tackles and two sacks in the Commanders’ first six games, and if he is out for the year, 2024 second-rounder Johnny Newton could see his workload ramp up quickly.

The Commanders are 4-2 and atop the NFC East, but Allen is one of the key players on a defense that has been alternately maligned and praised for its play this season. He is also a weekly guest of the Sports Junkies Tuesdays at 9 am, although that could potentially change this week and/or going forward based on this news.
