Commanders release LB/EDGE Jamin Davis

Scratch another Ron Rivera era selection off the payroll.

The Washington Commanders announced Tuesday they have released LB/EDGE Jamin Davis, the franchise’s first-round pick in 2021, among a series of roster moves.

The team also released safety Sheldrick Redwine from the practice squad, and signed safety S Ben Nikkel and WR Michael Strachan to the practice squad.

Davis, the No. 19 overall pick out of Kentucky in 2021, led the team with 104 tackles in the 2022 season, but slipped back to 89 in 13 games last season and never seemed to be a fit for new GM Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn’s scheme/plans in 2024; the former declined his fifth-year option this past offseason and the latter tried to move Davis to more of an edge rusher position as he revamped the front seven.

It looked as if Davis was making strides in camp, but he played in just five of the Commanders’ first seven games and had 13 tackles (one for loss) and no sacks. He was inactive in Weeks 2 and 6, the latter coming after he played a season-high 27 snaps (23 on defense, four special teams).

His final game as a Commander was Sunday’s win over the Panthers, where he played 16 defensive snaps and had one tackle.
