Kevin Sheehan's reaction to Commanders signing Sam Cosmi to four-year extension
The Washington Commanders announced they have agreed to a four-year, $74 million extension with offensive guard Sam Cosmi. The deal includes over $45 million guaranteed for the second-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, per media reports.
"He's a Commander through and through," head coach Dan Quinn said on Wednesday. "Plays tough, square and strong. He'll be an anchor inside for years to come."
General manager Adam Peters called it a "great day" for the franchise.
"Sam has bought into the vision that DQ and I have had for this team since day one," Peters said in a team release. "He is a pillar of our offensive line and we believe that Sam's best playing days are ahead. Sam is a great leader and teammate and we're excited that he will be a member of our team for years to come."
Kevin Sheehan called it good news and "the contract that they needed to get done" on the first big contract re-signing of a current player of the Peters era.
"This was something that the probably had to get done before the season started, you did not want Sam Cosmi to get to that point where he could become an unrestricted free agent," Sheehan said, adding that there is no fifth-year option to pick up since the guard wasn't a first-round pick meaning without the extension this would have been a contract year for him. "You had to get him signed, you didn't want a guy like this getting to unrestricted free agency."
Cosmi was the fourth-ranked guard in the NFL last year per PFF and No. 1 in December/January, a small consolation at the end of a rough 4-13 year.
"He's also a terrific young man and perfect for the culture and the organization that Adam Peters and Dan Quinn want to build," Sheehan continued. "I'm glad they got the deal done."
Back in June during OTAs, Cosmi joined The Kevin Sheehan Show and spoke about how there already had been ‘a lot more hustling’ throughout OTAs and minicamp and ‘the vibe is very up,’ which has the activities feeling ‘fresh’ – for the players under the new head coach and coaching staff.
“Everybody's feeling rejuvenated,” Cosmi told Sheehan in June, “and you can feel it in the building. Mr Harris said he's gonna give us all the tools, whatever tools we need and we don't have, and I can already tell that's in place; he's trying to make things around here better and things for the fans better. The thing I love the most is the fact that they are listening to what we have to say; not a lot of places run like that on every level, but they want our opinions, and I think that’s awesome to hear and be a part of.”
Peters thanked Cosmi's representatives for "their professionalism and partnership in getting this deal done."
"It was impressive to see both sides work so well together," the GM's statement concluded. "On behalf of the entire Commanders organization, I'd like to congratulate Sam, his wife Blair, and their daughter Clara on this special day."
