Craig Hoffman looks at Commanders' trade scenarios, what’s Brandon Aiyuk worth?
Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk is sending all the signals that his time with the San Francisco 49ers is coming to an end. And after a FaceTime call with Commanders rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels – his former college teammate at Arizona State – was posted on TikTok, there are murmurs around the NFL world that Aiyuk and Washington could be on a collision course.
How realistic is that? And if Adam Peters called his former team and boss in San Francisco, what is it worth to pry the fifth-year receiver from the 49ers' clutches?
With Aiyuk wanting a new contract, there is no financial impediment to the Commanders being able to pat the 26-year-old, Craig Hoffman said. The reason is they have the cap space and a lack of long-term commitments in the form of big contracts to prevent them from doling out one more to a wide receiver.
"They have the most cap space in the league," he added. "They have no position group that is 'oh that's locked in.' Because Jon Allen is up soon, Daron Payne is up soon/those guys can be moved on from sooner with a minimal dead cap. Terry McLaurin same thing."
Well, here's one trade scenario that caught Hoffman's eye: The Commanders give up Dyami Brown (who Hoffman sees as somebody who can take the top off the defense with his speed and a a willing blocker, a trait the 49ers value) and second-round draft pick and a fourth-round pick.
Hoffman takes pause at giving up the second-round pick because he trusts Peters in the draft to find talent and doesn't want to sacrifice the flexibility later for a player now.
But, is it worth that premium? Hoffman and producer Anthony Haynie talk it out. The full conversation can be heard on the audio player above.
