Jay Gruden to Kevin Sheehan: Commanders should be trying to trade for Brandon Aiyuk

"I watch people walk around like they're owed something," former Washington Redskins great Brian Mitchell said on Tuesday on 106.7 The Fan. "Nah, in this profession you take everything that you want. You have to go out there and kick down a door to get it. And I'm watching dudes pouting and walking around sulking. What the hell is that? This is not little league. This is the big leagues. And if you can't understand competition is gonna be present, and forget about it and move on and just go full-speed every day, every play, every opportunity then that's on you. Because people get cut based off of body language."

Mitchell didn't mention the player, but said they had "exceptional talent" and they "don't produce." And that has led to the idea that he was talking about the Washington Commanders' former first-round draft pick Jahan Dotson, who is dealing with competition for his spot in the WR pecking order.

Kevin Sheehan said on Wednesday that if Dotson thinks he's a "made man" already then Dotson is making a "big mistake."

"I think there's a chance with a legitimate offensive coordinator and a legitimate NFL quarterback – which you've got a chance of having both of those this year, that you did not have last year," Sheehan said. "That Jahan could really benefit from that. But you can't, with a new regime" have an attitude issue or even the hit of a body language problem.

Sheehan floats the possibility that Dan Quinn is just challenging Dotson, that they believe in his talent, but putting him out there with all four quarterbacks in the first preseason that he needs a little attitude adjustment and he can still be a big part of the offense.

But the signing of Martavis Bryant, tells Sheehan that the Commanders likely view that they have an issue at that position. "They're not thrilled with what they have right now overall at wide receiver," he said.

And that all leads to this: Brandon Aiyuk is still out there and still available. Former Redskins head coach Jay Gruden looked at his old team's current WR set up and told Sheehan: "I think they do need to get more of a threat with [Terry McLaurin] out there, I would love for them to trade for Brandon Aiyuk I think that would be perfect."

Gruden added that if Washington can't trade for Aiyuk, "they do need to find another more stable target."

"Is Jahan more of a slot guy? Is he an outside guy? He still hasn't figured that out yet," the ex-head coach continued. "I thought from a evaluation standpoint from when he was in college he would be more of a slot guy... I just think they need another good threat on the outside, a bigger type threat that can match the athleticism that Terry has."

Gruden said "hell yeah" when asked if he would be interested in Aiyuk and praised his versatility in his game and called him "good for any team, but he'd be a really good fit here [in Washington]."

"You gotta have at least two that can go up and get it," he said about the need to partner another good outside WR with McLaurin. "And that physicality that Aiyuk brings, too, is what I really like about him. Because he seems like an unselfish player, willing to go in there and block and those guys are hard to find."
