Former Washington head coach Jay Gruden stopped by Grant and Danny on Thursday, talking about a moment in Commanders history that he never thought would happen.
“Never believed it. Not for a second,” Gruden said, when asked about the thought of Dan Snyder selling the franchise. “I think a lot of things transpired in a negative way that kid of spiraled downhill for him, and he was forced to do it. I don’t think he had much of a choice. He made some poor decisions, and the outcome is perfect for Commanders fans that he’s out of here.”
Gruden coached Washington for five-plus seasons, all under Snyder’s reign, and it’s hard for him to pinpoint specific places where Snyder’s meddling impacted the team, only because there were so many to choose from.
“Where do I begin?” Gruden said. “There were a lot of issues and decisions that took place, just football wise. I don’t even know about the other stuff…but from what I can remember, the personnel decisions were the key. Some of the things that he stepped in and made decisions over, without even watching film or consulting people that he had hired to do the job, was concerning to me.”
Grant wondered if Gruden had any hesitancy to take the job considering Snyder’s reputation, but Gruden, as many other coaches did, believed he could overcome that obstacle and win as a head coach for a prominent NFL franchise.
“You hear horror stories,” Gruden said. “Spurrier didn’t work, Jim Zorn didn’t work, Schottenheimer didn’t work, Shanahan didn’t work, but you just figure that maybe, with a few first-round picks, some personnel changes, some tweaks…a little duct tape, you can make it work out.”
