Jay Gruden reveals to Chris Russell what's most impressed him about Jayden Daniels

The Washington Commanders offense has for the first time since 1991 scored 38 points or more in back-to-back games. For perspective, the starting quarterback who helped them accomplish that feat had not yet been born. And wouldn't be born for another nine years.

"Obviously, Jayden Daniels is playing amazing, out of his mind," former redskins head coach Jay Gruden told Chris Russell.

Of course, Gruden did highlight the good play of the offensive line – noting rookie tackle Brandon Coleman – the tight ends and the running backs, helping make the rookie's job a bit easier through four weeks of the season.

"You also have to mention they're getting a lot of time because Arizona chose probably 10 to 12 times to only rush three 'cause they're scared of Jayden's running ability and they're playing a lot more coverage," Gruden said. "[That] enabled Jayden to sit back there and look over the field and go through progression, progression, progression and find a guy open.

"That's what's been most impressive to me is when he doesn't feel rushed he doesn't run into pressure. He stays back, he stays poised, he scours the field with his eyes and finds two, three, four progressions on down and makes the throw.

"Some guys when everything's kind of not there, they'll scramble around, but he just stays in the pocket where he's at. And when there is pressure he gets away from it. I don't know what you do as a defensive coordinator against this guy, three-man rushes don't work that's for sure, four-man rushes aren't working, five-man rushes definitely aren't working. He's got the defense by the tail right now."

So when Daniels does move out of the pocket to avoid pressure, what's the most important factor in remaining able to deliver the ball down the field? Gruden said, for him, it is about ball security and keeping two hands on the football and then buying as much time as you can to keep eyes down the field and then run if you have to.

"Against Tampa Bay, he kinda looked like a little bit of his Arizona State where he just took off and ran," Gruden said. "But the last two or three games he's been very poised in the pocket and when he has to break contain, his eyes are down the field and he's finding guys. And if not, he's just takes off and runs and he's very effective at both, that's what makes him so scary."
