Joe Theismann on Darrell Green's jersey retirement, NFL Draft quarterbacks with Kevin Sheehan

The Washington Commanders will be retiring the No. 28 jersey worn by Darrell Green during the two decades he spent playing for the franchise, the team announced Thursday.

"This decision comes as a tribute to Gren's unparalleled contributions to both our franchise and the league as a whole," Josh Harris said in a statement, adding his "legacy transcends the boundaries of the football field."

"Throughout his remarkable career, Green embodied the values of excellence, perseverance, and sportsmanship on and off the field," Harris said. "His speed, skill, and dedication to the game and our community for a record 20 years earned him the nickname 'The Ageless Wonder' and made him a beloved figure in Washington, D.C., and beyond."

Harris added that the jersey retirement "symbolizes our commitment to preserving the rich history and tradition of our franchise."

"His presence as one of the greatest players to ever wear the Burgundy and Gold will forever be felt at Commanders Field, serving as an inspiration to current and future generations of players, coaches, and fans," the statement read.

Joe Theismann joined Kevin Sheehan to reminisce about Green's time in Washington and how it "didn't take long" for the former Redskins quarterback to realize this was the fastest player around.

"The thing that impressed me, and I tell people this all the time, Darrell Green as a defensive back made me a better quarterback," Theismann told Sheehan. "Because even in practice, if you were even a little bit late – his reaction time and his skillset and his quickness and explosiveness – he'd get to the ball. So you had to have everything just right when you worked against Darrell. And we saw that at the professional level that's why he's in the Hall of Fame."

Theismann said: "It still amazes me how quick he was" but, "He just couldn't catch the football, to be honest with you. He had terrible hands... He could have had 20 more [interceptions in his career] and he would tell you that, too."

After taking about the past, Theismann and Sheehan transitioned to the present and the future: The Commanders making the No. 2 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft.
