It was suspected this morning when the Sports Junkies were on air Tuesday morning but later confirmed: Aaron Rodgers has a torn Achilles tendon and will be out for the season. That leaves Zach Wilson as QB1, and later Tuesday, reports had Gang Green reaching out to some veteran free agent quarterbacks as initial feelers.
CBSSports.com had five options for the Jets to consider, and of course, two of them are former Commanders…with No. 5 being Carson Wentz.
“Of course they have to consider him – they may not want to go with it, but they have to consider it,” EB said with a tinge of disgust in his voice. “I’d be surprised if he didn’t get a text or a phone call already, at least come in for a workout and pick his brain.”
“I think his reputation has been so sullied, I don’t see them going to him,” JP said, with EB asking why and JP simply saying “his play has gotten worse, and his reputation – which could be wrong – he has a bad rap in the locker room.”
No. 4 was Zach Wilson, who is actually the guy for now, but Bish and EB get it.
“If they don’t feel comfortable with Tim Boyle as the true backup quarterback, they have to reach out and try to find someone,” Bish said.
“But they liked him enough to keep him as the backup.”
“He does deserve an opportunity to lose it,” EB replied. “Even if it’s two or three games to bring someone in and get them up to speed. The question is how long of a leash is he going to have.”
No. 3 was Jameis Winston (Derek Carr’s backup in New Orleans), and No. 1 was luring Tom Brady out of retirement, but No. 2 was also a backup…as in the current Commanders one, Jacoby Brissett?
“Washington just saw their quarterback basically play a game with a concussion,” EB said. “They signed him for a reason; they value him, and there’s no way they’re going to take it and say we’ll go with Fromm.”
“I was going to throw his name out, but I don’t think you can do it if you’re Washington,” Bish added. “The Jets aren’t going to offer you enough to make it worth it.”
John Paul Flaim had a different idea.
“See I think if you can hold him hostage…the Jets are desperate, so I’d move on,” JP replied, “and here’s why: if it doesn’t work out for Sam Howell, the season is over and Ron Rivera is going to be gone. You’re heavily invested in Howell, and getting your team to the playoffs – and if you pull the plug on Sam Howell, it’s because it hasn’t worked out, and the season is basically over.”
EB disagreed once again, saying if Howell takes another head shot next week you’re down to Fromm, but JP’s reply was ‘no one expects Jacoby Brissett to lead them to the playoffs’ – although the guys all definitely disagreed with JP’s idea that they could get a second-rounder for Brissett.
“I’m grabbing a second-round pick, and then I’m calling Colt McCoy,” was JP’s idea.
