Grant Paulsen tells the Junkies Montez Sweat's Sunday 'looked like a $24 million a year performance'

A little Commanders cross-talk on 106.7 The Fan today – Grant & Danny take the 106.7 The Fan airwaves at 2 pm, but Grant Paulsen joined the Junkies much earlier to break down everything about Sunday’s win – including the fact that indeed, the atmosphere around the stadium, even hours before, was like a party.

“It was just so refreshing – walking through the parking lot, everyone was happy. It was the party atmosphere everyone expected, and some fans were there for the first time in 10 or 15 years,” Grant said. “I even caught up with John Riggins, and it was surreal. Such a strange experience that people WANTED to be there; people went to the games before because there were only eight or nine of them, but yesterday, people wanted to be at the game.”

Everything involving the returning alumni was also “well done,” which Grant didn’t necessarily expect and said he took the L on, but was happy to see for the new generation of fans who have never known anything but Snyder misery.

As for the game itself? A lot of good, a lot of bad, but one of the former was the way the defense took over in the second half and carried the team to the finish line with the help of smart offense.

“Look at how they called the second half – they get the ball back at the Arizona 22 in the fourth quarter, and instead of throwing it once or going to the end zone for a kill shot, they ran it three times to run clock and kicked a field goal, because they knew Arizona wasn’t going to score a touchdown,” Grant said. “They completely dominated, with 11 tackles for loss and three sacks – they stopped Arizona for a minus play on all but one of their 12 positions, and this is why you pay these guys the money.”

Grant referenced James Smith-Williams noting post-game how the defense is there to close, and how Montez Sweat’s day “looked like a $24 million performance” – but there is one question:

“How much of that takeover was because it was Arizona, or was that something they can do against other teams?” Grant asked. “We’ll see as weeks go on, but this one will look like a line drive in the box score.”
