JUNKIES: John Feinstein on Rivera-Bieniemy controversy, Kevin Brown suspension

Another Feinstein Friday saw John joint he Junks to talk a little swimming technique, a little on Phil Mickelson’s golf gambling scandal (and how much drinking may affect some of the degenerate behavior rampant among top golfers), and some controversial potential “malfunctions” in sports – like, did the NBA rig the 1985 lottery with a “frozen envelope” to send Patrick Ewing to the Knicks, or was there really a “lights issue” at Camden Yards one night that helped keep Cal Ripken’s streak intact?

But the big story he discussed was the Rivera-Bieniemy controversy at Commanders camp this week, something he places the blame for solely on Rivera.

“I don’t know if I’m surprised…I’m just stunned. Eric Bieniemy is obviously a very important part of these team, hired to be a new voice in the offensive room, and I know Eric well and know his voice,” John said. “If Ron felt Eric was getting on the guys too much, you call him into your office, you don’t tell a reporter. I was completely taken aback, and it makes me wonder about the immediate future or Ron Rivera.”

He also weighed in on something he thought was ‘even more embarrassing’ – the Orioles’ suspension of announcer Kevin Brown.

“Completely absurd. I watched the tape – he brings up the fact they won three of five games in Tampa and had only won three games there the last three years, and John Angelos presumably suspends him?” Feinstein said. “He’s a good broadcaster and the Orioles are the best team in baseball! Just shut up and let your team do the talking. That stuns me just as much as Rivera, but it’s actually more embarrassing. His dad fired Jon Miller, one of the best broadcasters ever, and now he’s probably going to lose a good young broadcaster.”
