Junkies respond to fans not sold on Commanders Deebo Samuel trade

The Sports Junkies spent part of Monday’s show reacting to Commanders fans’ grades of the Deebo Samuel trade, particularly those fans that believed it was a bad move by Washington.

Several fans pointed to Samuel’s injuries and dropoff in production over the past two seasons, but Cakes says the former Pro Bowler is still just 29 years old and is only signed for one year, so to spend a fifth-round pick to test out a player with star potential and major upside is well worth the cost.

“It’s a one-year rental,” Cakes said. “You’re not getting married to Deebo Samuel. You’re having a fling to see if it develops into something further down the road. You’re not locked into five years of Deebo Samuel. And you didn’t give up a second-round pick. You gave up a fifth-round pick.

“He’s got a little bit of wide receiver diva to him, but that’s the case for a lot of wide receivers...tons of these guys have a little bit of baggage. But to get him for a fifth-round pick, you’re basically stealing him off the scrapheap.”

Bishop isn’t worried about the trade either, and says a late-round pick for player who was one of the best receivers in the game not too long ago, is worth the investment, especially when he won’t be the top receiver target for Jayden Daniels.

“If you wanted him two years ago,” Bish said. “It would have cost you a lot more than a fifth-round pick.”
