JUNKIES: Should the Commanders consider trading for Tee Higgins?

The Commanders are unwittingly embroiled in Brandon Aiyuk’s saga with the 49ers, but is there another disgruntled wide receiver looking to get paid they should have on their radar?

The Commanders are unwittingly embroiled in Brandon Aiyuk’s saga with the 49ers, but is there another disgruntled wide receiver looking to get paid they should have on their radar?

Rookies report to training camp this week around the league – including Washington’s, which Jason Bishop says ‘I’ve never looked more forward to a training camp than this year’ – and JP read a Heavy.com article that was headlined “Commanders can accelerate Jayden Daniels with trade for certified weapon,” leading him to wonder if, should he not work out a long-term deal with Cincinnati by today’s deadline, Tee Higgins could be a trade target to be that weapon?

“Higgins is set to play on the franchise tag for the Bengals, and would you like the Commanders to be proactive and get a guy like Higgins?” JP asked.

“Absolutely, get him in the mix,” Cakes said. “He’s 25 years old, and if he weren’t playing on a team with Ja’Marr Chase, he would be the number one option, and he’d be a No. 1 option here. He’s like pretty close to Terry McLaurin, but personal preference, I think Higgins is a more naturally-talented player than Terry McLaurin. Instantly upgrades your wide receiver room.”

“Get all the weapons you can get,” Bish added. “He averages somewhere in the 70-catch range and six or seven touchdowns a year.”

JP thinks that would definitely count as ‘setting up Daniels for success,’ and the Commanders still have $37 million in cap space to use, so at least to Bish, it depends what you have to give up.

“Would you get it done for two twos?” JP asked, while Cakes countered with “how about a 2 and a 4?”

“If you can get Tee Higgins for a two and a four, then you just have to sign him to a long-term extension,” Cakes said. “I love that. I would love that for the Commanders.”

“He’s also a big dude, 6-foot-4 and 219 pounds, and most of the receivers here are on the smaller side,” JP said.

That somehow led into a discussion of where certain Commanders could go in fantasy (spoiler: not No. 1, where Jason Bishop is picking in one of his leagues), and then some more Aiyuk talk – and you can listen to it all in the audio above, starting about 18 minutes in.
