Kevin Sheehan on Dan Quinn's role in selecting Commanders next quarterback, No. 2 pick

Colin Cowherd – who it should be noted is not one of the big-time news breakers around the cricles of professional football – said recently that he has been told that the Washington Commanders would select LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels with the No. 2 overall pick.

"I'm told they believe he's more consistent than Drake Maye, he is quicker, more moble than Drake Maye," Cowherd said, "and offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, who will have some say in this, has had multiple quarterbacks in his college and pro coaching career who play like him."

Kevin Sheehan, after playing the clip of Cowherd [starting around the 8:40 mark of the audio player above], said it is interesting that those who have put out reports on who the Commanders will be picking, have said that Daniels is the guy Washington likes at No. 2.

That was another report that foucsed on Kingsbury as having a say in this. But what about the head coach? ESPN's John Keim wrote about what Dan Quinn wants in a quarterback.

Quinn, the defensive-minded coach, seems to have that background influence what he looks for in a quarterback. A guy who spends his time looking to confuse the opposing passer looks at processing speed, in addition to the physical attributes necessary to play at this level.

"How quickly can they process something? 'OK, it looks like zone but it's really man-to-man. It's two-high [safeties], it's one high,'" Quinn said, via Keim. "All the triggers you want to get to, can you do it after the ball gets in his hand? Can we disguise [defenses] to make them really have to figure it out after the snap? The best of the best? 'I can process as I'm taking the ball, as I'm going through the play.'

"That's what I look for. How do they respond when the unblocked blitzer comes?"

Quinn goes on to say: "How quickly can a guy make a right decision?"

And on Daniels, the Commanders' head coach said, as it relates to him playing against SEC defenses the last two seasons: "Man, they have had concepts and looks and different things and Jayden has been able to really process things quickly."

He also spoke about the UNC quarterback.

"What you see is ability to create and get outside on the run," Quinn said of Maye. "If the protection breaks down, boom, he can create and go. I thought that's one of his superpowers for sure."

For Sheehan, he doesn't know if he learned if Quinn is leaning in either direction of Daniels or Maye, but what was emphasized is this: Quinn has never been charged with helping find a quarterback as head coach. This is not his first time as a top guy, but he has never had to look for the next face of a franchise and is relying on the GM and the OC – who did help pick a new QB – for some guidance.

Adam Peters will make the final call, but Sheehan mentioned that this is a huge reveal in this way: "This will be the most collaborative process in personnel decision-making that we may ever see from this group. When Adam Peters got hired, remember in that introductory press conference... he said, well the head coach will have a lot to say... this will be a collaborative process."

Sheehan said this is a huge decision being made by three people without significant experience in doing this before Being the person who makes the call on the new quarterback.

Sheehan's full take on the collaboration can be heard above!
