Kevin Sheehan reminds you immediate draft grades are just that: in the moment
Anyone and everyone has come out with a take on the Commanders’ draft class, of course including Kevin Sheehan – but he reminds you that nothing is complete on paper, and EVERYONE’S mileage will vary.
“The grades, the RAS scores, the number of team captains…I mean, what a draft!” Sheehan said as he read some comments from folks who seemed to love it. “So, please do not take what I'm about to say the wrong way, those of you who are ready to hand Adam Peters the 2024 GM of the Year award before an actual game is played, because I too am more optimistic about things and I've been in a long time, so I understand that feeling – but some of you out there just need to kind of slow it down a little bit, take a few deep breaths.”
Yes, indeed, it’s still only April 29, so hold your horses a bit.
“Grading a draft a few minutes after it ends is mostly ridiculous. It's silly, really,” Kevin continued. “If your stated goal is to create a draft based on a certain criteria that either you believe in or created, something like the value of the position in which players were selected, that can be an in the moment evaluation.”
Kevin used Johnny Newton and Warren Sharp’s ‘draft capital over expectation’ metric as an example, but again, a win or two aside there doesn’t mean Newton is the next Warren Sapp, even if most outlets gave Washington anywhere from an A to a B-minus at best.
“The guys who are paid to get this right are actually deemed to be successful when they get it right on like 40 percent of the players that they pick, and there's no way today for any of us to know if Washington's 2024 draft will be a success,” Kevin said. “I’ll go through it and give you some thoughts because that's what we always do this time of year, but there's no way I or anybody else can possibly get to say Adam Peters should just take a bow. Nobody can take a bow today...just go back and look at 2020."
Take a listen above to Kevin’s entire solilioquy!
