The Washington Commanders met with Michigan quarterback JJ McCarthy and Greg Holcomb, McCarthy's personal QB coach, joined Kevin Sheehan for a conversation that indicated there could be some serious interest from the Adam Peters contingent in Washington's front office and the feeling among the quarterback's camp is mutual.
Holcomb told Sheehan that he has been speaking to McCarthy's father about who the prospect has met with and what those conversations have been like. "It's really crazy," he said, "...his stock has just skyrocketed post combine and pro day and so. I think there are teams that are [looking] to move up to try and get him. I do know that [his father] told me there was a very positive conversation with the Washington people at the NFL Combine, that they just said a lot of the really nice things about JJ that he checks all of the boxes and it would be hard for anybody to pass on him... but it sounds like there are a handful of specific teams that are really kind of in the wheelhouse to grab him."
Based on that, the QB coach said he believes the Commanders are among the teams and he would love to see the Michigan product land in Washington.
"I don't want to give away too much information but the family seems like they would be very happy if he landed there," he told Sheehan. "And I'll be honest, there are a handful of cities if he landed that they wouldn't be very happy, as you can imagine. I'm sure everyone in the draft has their dream cities and programs... at No. 2, I'll tell you everyone would be very happy."
Holcomb said the new front office and the coaching staff has made a very positive impression on the McCarthys.
