Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera believed the team gut their guy at No. 16 and Kevin Sheehan agrees.
"For the night, I loved the pick. I think for the second-straight year they got it right in the first round," Sheehan said, referring to last year's first-round pick, wide receiver Jahan Dotson.
The Commanders "got a guy they feel really good about and he fills an important need," he said, adding Washington has a lot more to do in Rounds 2 and 3 on Friday night and Rounds 4-7 on Saturday, but the Forbes pick was "a good start."
For Sheehan, Forbes was somebody who he had been talking about and wanting the Commanders to take at No. 16 for some time and explained why. he has some level of trust in the current front office in Washington.
"The second straight year they picked a player that they really loved, that for some it was a bit too early," Sheehan said, "I think Ron Rivera along with Martin Mayhew... I think they have a plan and they know what they're doing."
Sheehan added: "Some of you might not have that same belief in that [football decision-making] group – and there are plenty of reasons to back up the assertion 'I don't believe in this group,' like of course, the win-loss record – but on roster construction, in particular, Ron Rivera recognized that this organization had a culture problem. Part of that he wasn't going to be able to fix... and that part of course was ownership... He wasn't going to be able to change the fact that his boss was going to be incompetent... but he felt like he was going to be given the opportunity to build the roster with the kind of football players that he believes in.
"Which are: adult-like, accountable, coachable, for starters. He hasn't gotten 'em all right, clearly. But he's also proven when he's made a mistake. He hasn't doubled down to save face, for the most part. I think we're seeing that a little right now with Chase Young."
Rivera wants a locker room with guys who can play and don't need babysitting, Sheehan said. And that is a big boost for Washington, and Rivera's strength comes from being able to find those players who fit that culture and identifying the kind of character the team needs.
"And I think the selection of Emmanuel Forbes continues that trend," Sheehan said.
The list of flaws for Forbes: His weight. That's it, he said. Sheehan then rattled off a list of positives and attributes that will get Commanders fans excited about the No. 16 overall pick. Listen to the full segment above.
