REPORT: Commanders, D.C. have framework of a deal to build new stadium on RFK site

Rejoice, Commanders fans who’ve wanted this for 25 years: it looks like the Washington football team is coming hoem to the District.

According to a report from NBC4 Washington, D.C. and the Commanders are close to a deal worth more than $3 billion to build a new stadium at the RFK site – with the Commanders putting at least $2 billion of that up to do so.

Per Mark Segraves’ report, the deal, which is still in negotations, would put in up to $2.5 billion of the current project total, with D.C. on the hook for up to $850 million – their total going towards ‘eligible capital costs associated with the stadium and infrastructure for the surrounding campus,’ including parking for the entire campus.

Segraves reports that sources close to the deal have the framework in place with DC paying out $500 million between 2026-2030 for infrastructure work, with the rest paid in 2032 through taxes generated from the development, as the plan would be to open the new stadium for the 2030 NFL season.

Per the report, a preliminary agreement obtained by NBC4 indicated the team would be the ‘master developer’ of the entire 180-acre site, which has been earmarked by the Mayor and the D.C. Council as desired to include mixed-use residential and retail with or without a new stadium.
