Rooster & Nell: What kind of role can Dyami Brown carve out in this Commanders offense?

It’s Terry McLaurin and Jahan Dotson on the top line, and with rookie Luke McCaffrey making a strong impression, there’s wonder where Dyami Brown will fit into the new Commanders offense this year.

Speaking with Lynnell Willingham after the first practice of the full Commanders training camp schedule, Brown felt like he was already on the right track towards that WR3 spot.

“I’m feeling great, ready to get things going. Day 1 started out smoothly,” Brown told Lynnell. “I’m just going back to who I was, being that deep threat and bringing energy, and being a little bit more vocal going in into Year 4, because I have some more experience. And I’m working on blocking, which is really important, especially in the run game with the backs we have that can make things happen. As they say, no block, no rock!”

He’s also developing chemistry with a brand-new quarterback, who has shown good things so far.

“His poise and aura, he has a whole lot of confidence in himself and takes the role that he wants to be the guy,” Brown said. “And he’s comfortable within this offense already to lead us to big things.”

So where do Rooster & Lynnell think Brown can fit in?

“He has not been good enough, period; he has less than 500 yards receiving, and we can’t just keep blaming the quarterback,” Rooster said.
“I think he’s going to make the initial roster, but maybe not as WR3.”

“He played a significant amount of snaps last year because he can block, but he’s a deep threat,” Nell fired back. “He just has to be more consistent with his hands, but all three of the guys in that fight bring a different skill set to the table, so in certain packages, you may seem them alternate.”

Chris isn’t as sold on Brown as a blocker, and wondered why if he has the deep threat skills, he hasn’t gotten more targets on a team that did nothing but throw – but, it can get better.

“I think he's going to benefit from Kliff Kingsbury as a better offensive coordinator, but also from the same wide receiver coach that he had last year in Bobby Engram, who has been in his ear,” Chris said. “Not to mention, if this team gets to be more four receiver-heavy, I think that's where Dyami Brown can carve out his role. If everybody's healthy, the fourth receiver role is where he can get in and line up on one side and run a deep post. But can he run shorter routes consistently and be counted on?”

“I can envision in my mind that to keep defenses off-balance, they could run in four-receiver sets and pass in 12 and 13 personnel,” Nell replied. “Short-area quickness is not his thing; I don't think he's a guy that's gonna run your zigs and speed outs, but the area where I want to see him improve is he can’t get alligator arms. I think he struggled with the physicality of the game, and there’s just an overall toughness that some may think he lacks, but I think he has it.”
