Washington Commanders

Jay Gruden and Chris Russell go through the two-point conversions that were and weren't Sunday

It’s quite a day when Jay Gruden compares a Commanders offensive performance (or lack thereof) to a UFC fight, but indeed, that’s what happened when Jay joined Chris Russell Monday to discuss Washington’s loss to the Cowboys.

“They had a chance early to just punch them; you ever see an MMA fight when a guy gets down in the corner, the guy jumps on them and beats the hell of him? They had a chance to do that early and didn’t,” Gruden said. “They had a chance to do that early, they had drives at plus-40, plus-47, minus-43, and plus-40 and didn’t get anything.”

Jay also joins Grant & Danny on 106.7 The Fan every Monday, and you can read his thoughts on what’s going wrong with the offense as a whole from their show – but despite everything, the Commanders had a chance to tie it up with 21 seconds left…but Austin Seibert missed an extra point, the Cowboys got a touchdown on the ensuing onside kick, and all hell broke loose.

Seibert also missed an earlier PAT and a field goal attempt as well, so not his best day, but what would Gruden have done?

“That’s one where I think if you feel like you're the better team, you kick it and go to overtime, but if you feel like you're not the better team, you're on the road, maybe go for two, make it a one-play thing to decide it,” Gruden said. “I think Coach Quinn had to think that, hell, we've had our ups and downs here, but we’re the better team, we’re gonna get the ball back, and they have their backup quarterback in and we're gonna win the game. The only issue is that now the extra point’s moved back and your kicker already missed one field goal. Those aren't givens anymore, especially in Washington off that turf, and Jayden has had a lot of success with the zone reads and RPOs and all that.”

But, there was good karma after Seibert had just hit a 51-yards field goal, so…

“You got all the momentum and it just gets knocked the hell out of you when you missed the kick,” Gruden said. “Bad snap, great hold by Tress, he just yanked it. I think the timing just gets knocked off a little bit with that, kind of like when someone honks their horn in the middle of your golf swing. It just screws up your mind and your tempo. Tough pill to swallow.”

Take a listen to Gruden’s entire visit, as he also discusses Kavontae Turpin’s return TD and the rest of Washington’s special teams issues, other questionable decisions on the day, and more!
