The last practice of the week for the Commanders wrapped up on Thursday and the Washington Post's Sam Fortier was in the bubble at Ashburn to take in the sights and sounds of what went down. He joined Craig Hoffman to discuss his takeaways from practice.
"Probably the most notable stretch, the thing that got talked about on Twitter most or among the fans there and the beat writers was there, was a stretch, I believe, it was 7-on-7 and then 11-on-11 red zone, they kinda did those periods back-to-back," Fortier told Hoffman. "And Sam Howell was really up and down during those. He threw back-to-back picks at one point then he threw three touchdowns in a row. It was kind of a seesaw sort of day for him."
The question heading into the rest of the summer is has Howell done anything that would prevent him from being the 'QB1' in head coach Ron Rivera's mind entering training camp?
Fortier asked Rivera about that and the coach said "We've seen what we need to see" from Howell to keep him ahead of veteran Jacoby Brissett in the QB pecking order right now. And in Fortier's mind, the second-year man had done anything to gain or lose any ground in the race and "it is still Sam Howell's job to lose."
After talking QBs, Fortier had updates on defensive end Chase Young's level of participation, cornerback Emmanuel Forbes performance ("in terms of minicamp for a rookie he has looked pretty dang good"), who will pair with Forbes at corner on the outside, the offensive line and if there might be any roster moves made before training camp.
