Caleb Williams’ Pro Day has come and gone, and Kevin Sheehan found it ‘very interesting’ that Keenan Allen, just acquired by the Bears last weekend was there; sure, he lives in SoCal and just came from the L.A. Chargers, and they’re acquainted, but NFL vets don’t just show up at local Pro Days without reason – and Williams said Allen ‘is here for a fourth-round pick.’
Washington was also there, but in Sheehan’s eyes, they’re actually on the clock…at No. 2, because Williams to the Bears has to be a foregone conclusion by now, based on that quote alone.
“They're gonna be at all these pro days, and you never know what will happen at the top of the draft with Chicago, but I do think now, there’s been no pushback from Caleb Williams on being drafted by Chicago, so it sure feels like he's going to the Bears,” Kevin said. “That's a pretty safe wager at this point, and I think it's a good situation for him. RG3 said he should pull an Eli Manning and tell Chicago he's not going to play for them – no, he's wrong. It's a good situation for a No. 1 overall quarterback.”
The 2004 Chargers weren’t very stable with all the infighting between coach, GM, and owner, and Eli had the NFL pedigree to maybe try that – and that situation even was different than John Elway or Bo Jackson using baseball as leverage.
The 2024 Bears, meanwhile, may be a legit QB away.
“That situation in Chicago is a good one. It’s a team that was 7-10, not 12-15, and wouldn’t typically wouldn't have the No. 1 overall pick,” Kevin said. “They have weapons on offense, with Keenan Allen next to DJ Moore along with D’Andre Swift in the backfield, and the defense is improving.
It's a team on the rise, and he's gonna enter into a situation where if he plays decent football, Chicago is going to compete for a better than .500 record in his first year.”
And now, after hearing how Williams talked about Allen…the Commanders are on the clock.
”That's where this draft is now. I just don't see Jayden Daniels, or Drake Maye, or J.J. McCarthy jumping Caleb Williams to No. 1, and I don't see Chicago trading that pick now,” Sheehan said. “There's so much about these quarterbacks we don’t know, but Caleb Williams is a special talent.
There’s a lot to like about the others, but Caleb Williams is a talent, and if all the other stuff is okay, he's the number one guy in this draft. Chicago is not passing on him.”
