Sheehan: Jayden Daniels has been nearly flawless for Commanders in preseason
Let's get this out there right at the top: This is just the preseason. It is really, really hard to draw any conclusions that will carry much weight after just a handful of series over two games. But, having put that disclaimer out there, Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels, the No. 2 overall pick, has looked pretty good so far.
"For people that watched Jayden Daniels a lot in college, you're reminded of certain things: He processes very quickly, he's got a very good release, quick release, great footwork in the pocket, he throws an accurate ball, he throws an on-time ball. All of those things have showed up during the preseason," Kevin Sheehan said on Monday, before looking at the rookie's two drives in Saturday's game at the Miami Dolphins.
In those two drives (which both ended in field goal attempts), Daniels completed 10 of 12 passes for 78 yards (6.5 yards per attempt) for a 93.8 passer rating. He also had a 13-yard run that greatly upset head coach Dan Quinn when he didn't get out of bounds or get down. And the hits is where Sheehan started the conversation.
"He took a big shot on a zone-read keeper for no gain and then he got tackled on a 13-yard zone-read keeper," Sheehan said of Daniels' two rush attempts. "Quarterbacks get tackled, it's tackle football, I understand that, I know what [Doc Walker] and [Brian Mitchell] and all of those guys would say to that... but this is your starting quarterback, this is a man who is being counted on to turn around the fortunes of a franchise that has been in the wilderness for 30 years. And to have taken any kind of hit unnecessarily in a preseason game is not something that Dan Quinn or Kliff Kingsbury or anybody wants to see.
"So [Quinn] made light of it... and I understand that, good for him, he's got a sense of humor... but at the same time behind the scenes I hope they're telling him, 'Don't do that. Don't do that. Run out of bounds, you had a clear easy path to run out of bounds.' And some of you will say 'That's what he did at LSU, that's gonna be a problem.' He got out of bounds a lot at LSU, he slid a lot at LSU. The problem at LSU is the games we're talking about were regular-season games. In which his team is trying to win those games... so some of that is competitive spirit, I'm fine with that.
"You've gotta have better sense than to take an unnecessary shot or get tackled at all. In a preseason game on the run."
Sheehan argues this is about Daniels "understanding his value" to the Washington franchise when it comes to taking hits.
But overall, "Man, he does a lot of things well," Sheehan said about the QB.
"He was on-time, the ball is out so quickly. It was impressive to watch," he continued. "He's able to really release that ball quickly. The ball is out accurately almost all of the time."
And that "quick game" is just about the only thing Kingsbury is showing right now, with the exception of one drop back on a third-and-long situation. "But he was good in the quick-game stuff," Sheehan said.
