Kevin Sheehan reacts to NPS allowing RFK Stadium to be demolished: 'A lot of memories will be crumbling'
The National Park Service has given the go-ahead for the RFK Stadium structure itself to be demolished, after their environmental assessment determined its demolition would have ‘no impact’ on the environment and the surrounding area – a study mandated because that is still federal land.
Maybe step two towards the Commanders (or someone) calling that home again?
“I don't know if this is tied into that you can't build a new stadium on that ground without demolishing the old stadium, I think everybody understands that – of course it was going to be demolished if Josh Harris and the Washington football franchise ultimately cut a deal, and we hope that they will, with the District of Columbia,” Kevin said. “To me it's, it's DC one, Maryland two, but Maryland's still in the running if the DC deal is much less advantageous for the team, with respect to contribution to everything that has to get done down there.”
But…
“The day that RFK Stadium gets demolished – and yes, it is an eyesore, I get it, and there are issues with it being used because of the condition of the stadium, which is not suitable for anything to be held there – but when that thing gets demolished, that's a lot of memories crumbling,” Kevin said. “We will do and pay proper respect to RFK Stadium when it gets demolished.”
