JUNKIES: Commanders interested in Kareem Hunt?

Commanders free agency rumors are running rampant, and the latest news is that Josina Anderson says the team has ‘made some preliminary inquiries behind the scenes” to running back Kareem Hunt.

“Been the No. 2 guy in Cleveland lately, but he had 1,000-yard season as a rookie in KC under Eric Bieniemy,” Bish said. “Nice little dual-threat guy, and I don’t think it hurts you. Any time you can add some depth to your RB room, it’s never a bad thing.”

“I don’t think he’s special, but he does bring a skill set that’s maybe a better, more proven version of what they thought they were getting in Antonio Gibson,” Cakes replied.

EB wanted to see what Hunt’s numbers look like compared to Gibson’s, knowing that Hunt was the No. 2 back in Cleveland behind a stud in Nick Chubb – but familiarity may carry more weight than production.

“The fact Bieniemy knows him is one reason they’re probably interested, and he can do a couple things for you,” Bish said.

“Gibson is in the last year of his deal, and RB is a spot where you can pick guys up on the cheap – I think Hunt would sign a one-year deal for a lower salary – so I don’t hate it,” Cakes said. “If you’re looking to upgrade your backs, especially if it’s cost-effective?”

“I don’t know how much of an impact it would have, because his skill set overlaps,” EB lamented, “and I don’t know how many spots we have – if we’re keeping four we have, we already have Gibby, Brian Robinson, and Chris Rodriguez?”

“What I like about Hunt is that he’s not just a first and second-down plodder like Robinson,” Cakes shot back. “Robinson might have some more receiving chops than he’s shown, but Hunt could be a dynamic guy out of the backfield, catching passes for a young quarterback – and if you’re Bieniemy, you want as many of those playmakers as you can get around Sam Howell.”

Cakes sees little downside if Hunt will take a one-year deal worth a couple million with incentives – so that it doesn’t hamstring the cap – but health will be an important factor, as backs also always get banged up, so Hunt could be, at worst, an insurance policy.

“I don’t think of it as a game-changer, but that’s fine,” EB said.

“Gibby has had injuries and Brian Robinson is going to get a lot of carries this year, so if he goes down, you bring in Hunt,” Bish replied.

The Junks then took some calls on the idea, and you can listen to it all starting about 19 minutes into the clip above!
