Report: Commanders were reluctant to include Chase Young in Russell Wilson trade package

The pieces are beginning to come together as to what the Washington Commanders offered Seattle for quarterback Russell Wilson. And while there are still some holes to fill in, it's clear that, in some way, Washington fell short, pushing the Seahawks to choose an offer from Denver instead.

We know, according to Grant Paulsen, that the Commanders offered three first-round picks for Wilson. That's a substantial offer in its own right, but especially so if it was only a piece of a larger compensation package that also included either a player or multiple players.

Perhaps it's true the Seahawks preferred to trade Wilson to the AFC. Perhaps they would have been willing to deviate from that plan if an NFC team had blown them away. Or, perhaps not.

And while we don't know which players, if any, the Commanders were willing to include, we do have at least some insight into who they weren't.

According to Jordan Schultz, Washington submitted "several substantial offers" to Seattle, giving itself multiple bites at the Russell Wilson apple, but was reluctant to include Chase Young in any of those trade packages.

Young still has plenty of time to prove himself worthy of being the second overall pick in 2020. But if this is what ultimately swayed Seattle in favor of Denver, it should be a tough pill for fans to swallow knowing Washington chose a pass rusher with nine career sacks over a franchise quarterback.

Now Washington gets to keep Young and its three first-round picks. And the Broncos get to keep Wilson, with legitimate aspirations of competing for a Super Bowl title.
