Could the Washington Football Team really use another first-round draft pick on a quarterback from Ohio State?
Well, just two years after selecting Dwayne Haskins with the 15th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, Washington may be interested in another Buckeyes quarterback in Justin Fields.
“There are people in the organization that like Justin Fields,” Kevin Sheehan said Wednesday on The Team 980.
“Just so you know the whole Ohio State thing,” Sheehan continued. “Justin Fields is not Dwayne Haskins in terms of the way he’s viewed as a leader, the way he’s viewed from a maturity standpoint.
“There is a lot of really good due diligence information on the kind of person and player and leader that Justin Fields is. And it’s all positive.”
Of course, people inside Ashburn liking a quarterback may not always lead to that quarterback getting drafted as recent history has told us.
But there is another quarterback who may be on Washington’s radar.
“I’ve seen a lot of recent mock drafts where Washington – Dane Brugler’s recent mock draft on The Athletic had Washington trading up to No. 7; giving up their first-rounder next year and their third-rounder this year (No. 82 overall) to move up twelve spots. So, Detroit would get 19, Washington would get 7 to select Trey Lance, the quarterback out of North Dakota State,” Sheehan said.
But there is another player who has been linked to Washington who Sheehan has heard people inside the organization admire: The No. 3 pick in the 2018 draft Sam Darnold.
“I like Sam Darnold. I liked him coming out of USC. I’ve liked him in some of the games he’s played with the Jets, and I’ll tell you, there are games that I’ve watched him play that hasn’t been good, but he was in a terrible situation in New York,” Sheehan said.
There have been recent reports about Darnold drawing interest from teams around the league and New York may be ready to move on from the 23-year-old Darnold and take a quarterback with the second overall pick in this year’s draft.
“I don’t know if Washington is one of those teams that have expressed interest [in acquiring Darnold],” Sheehan said. “But it would not surprise me if they were one the teams because I know that there are people within the organization that do like Sam Darnold.
“There are quarterbacks that people in decision-making positions in the [Washington] organization – that aren’t on the roster – that they like. Obviously, they made a move for [Matt] Stafford, we know that. There were reports that they expressed interest in [Jared] Goff, and Derek Carr, and now Marcus Mariota.”
So while Washington has signed Taylor Heinicke to a two-year extension earlier this month, the quarterback situation is far from certain for Ron Rivera headed into year two.
