The Washington Football Team for just the third time in 10 games came away winners, after a 20-9 win over the Cincinnati Bengals.
And for just the third time in his first year as Washington head coach, Ron Rivera was able to give a postgame speech to a winning locker room after his team moved to just one half game out of first place in the NFC East.
"I told you guys, man. It's in this room. I believe in it, I really truly do," Rivera began.
"I believe we have every opportunity to take the next step," he said. "One thing we gotta do is stop waiting for somebody else. Take it upon ourselves, take it upon you, ok. Take it upon you. Please, take ownership, alright?"
Then Rivera added a special message when handing out a game ball.
"Sometimes in this game, we play the game for specific reasons," Rivera told his team. "And sometimes we play it for our family and for our loved ones. Sometimes we lose them. And when we do it's tough on the soul. But I tell you, though, when you've had somebody that's been on your side a long time you play for them.
"And I'm gonna go ahead give this one to Brandon Scherff."
According to ESPN's John Keim, Scherff's grandfather died earlier this week.
