Ryan Kerrigan announced he's signed with the Philadelphia Eagles, turning down other opportunities for a chance to remain in the NFC East.
Now Kerrigan will play against his former team twice a year, writing in an Instagram post of himself in an Eagles uniform: "I know I probably wasn’t your favorite player over the past decade, but @philadelphiaeagles fans I’m fired up to be playing for you guys now! LFG!!! #flyeaglesfly"
Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the Eagles confirmed Kerrigan has agreed to a one-year deal.
Washington head coach Ron Rivera had remained open to the idea of Kerrigan returning, but him parting with the organization after 10 seasons was always far more likely after he had been relegated to a backup role last season for the first time in his career.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Kerrigan also had interest from the Steelers and Bengals, but ultimately chose Washington's division rival.
Washington selected Kerrigan 16th overall out of Purdue in 2011. He would go on to become the franchise's all-time sack leader (95.5), surpassing Dexter Manley (91) in Washington's Week 1 game against the Eagles in 2020.
The standard of durability, Kerrigan missed only four games during his time in Washington, playing in 156 of 160 possible games.
The news seemed imminent late Sunday night when Kerrigan took to Instagram to thank Washington.
"I’ll never be able to sum up what these past 10 years have meant to me in an Instagram post, but what I can say is that they have been some of the best of my life," Kerrigan wrote. "I hope you had as much fun watching me as I did playing for you. Thank you, Washington, for everything. – HBK"
