The Washington Football Team is using the franchise tag on Brandon Scherff for the second straight offseason.

Washington announced on Monday night it would apply the franchise tag on its starting right guard, which could cost the organization upwards of $18.03 million.

The deadline for teams to apply the franchise tag arrives on Tuesday at 4 p.m., although there has been talk of that deadline being delayed with the NFL yet to finalize its salary cap for 2021.

Washington will now have until the yet-to-be-announced deadline — which usually falls around mid-summer — to reach a long-term deal with Scherff or it will otherwise owe him the full freight of his one-year franchise tag.

Washington head coach Ron Rivera is scheduled to speak to reporters on Wednesday at 11 a.m.

Scherff, 29, was selected fifth overall by Washington in 2015.
