The Washington Football Team released wide receiver Steven Sims Jr. Monday morning, clearing a roster spot for offensive tackle David Sharpe, who was activated off of the Covid-19/Reserve list.
Sims, 24, became an early fan favorite in Washington after signing as an undrafted free agent out of Kansas in 2019, gathering 395 yards from scrimmage with five touchdowns his rookie season. But after leading the NFL in muffed punt returns in 2020, Sims quickly fell out of favor with the new regime under head coach Ron Rivera.
Across two games against the Patriots and Bengals this preseason, Sims came down with one catch for 18 yards — ultimately not enough to secure a roster spot in Washington.
With the release of Sims, Washington still has 10 wide receivers on its roster. Washington also released Kelvin Harmon a little over a week ago.
Expect more cuts to come shortly, as Washington needs to trim its roster down to 80 players by Tuesday. It currently sits at 86 players. The final roster cutdown to 53 players arrives the following Tuesday, Aug. 31.
