Regardless of what happens criminally or civilly over an alleged incident at a marina involving Tyreek Hill, the Dolphins receiver could potentially be in line for punishment from the NFL.
Hill is being investigated for alleged misdemeanor battery over a reported “disagreement” at a marina in Miami Beach on Sunday. According to the police report, there was a “verbal altercation” and Hill slapped an employee of the Kelley Fishing Fleet at Haulover Marina.
The Dolphins acknowledged they were aware of the situation, but thus far there has not been anything from the league about a potential investigation. Appearing on “The Joe Rose Show,” ProFootballTalk’s Mike Florio outlined what could be ahead for Hill.
“One of the things about the personal conduct policy, the league has a lot of leeway and discretion in deciding how aggressively it’s going to pursue any given player,” Florio said. “Look at Ezekiel Elliott, he was never arrested, he was never even sued civilly, he ended up with a six-game suspension seven years ago. …
“If they decide that they want to be aggressive with Tyreek Hill – and the reports have been all over the place, it’s been bizarre to me. Initially there was a report that the alleged victim in this case didn’t want to press charges, then the police report says the alleged victim does want to report charges. There was a report that the investigation had ended from a criminal perspective, and then there was a report that the investigation is still very much alive.
“If there is an alleged victim who is motivated, and the NFL is motivated to get in touch with that person, if the NFL is motivated to harvest any surveillance footage that, reportedly -- and this comes from the police report -- captured the incident, that’s something the NFL could do. And then the NFL looks at the evidence and decides what the outcome should be.”
The incident reportedly was caught on surveillance video.
Florio pointed out that whether the NFL or a media outlet is the one leaking it, there’s a good chance we’re going to see the video at some point.
“The thing about surveillance footage, as we learned with the Ray Rice case, if the NFL doesn’t get it, TMZ probably will," Florio said. "We’re going to see it one way or the other. So the NFL would be wise to just gather the facts that are available and see where the facts take them. Don’t predetermine, don’t have an agenda, just gather the facts, you have enough information now that something should be explored, then figure it out from there. That’s what the NFL should do. Whether the NFL does do it is a different issue.
“And the one last thing to keep in mind, Tyreek Hill’s history dating back to 2015 when he pleaded guilty to choking and punching his then-pregnant girlfriend. He was never punished for that by the NFL – although he slipped to Round 5 of the draft, that was one of the reasons why he fell I believe – but that could be something that could potentially enhance the penalty if the NFL would decide to take action against him for anything that occurs during his NFL career.”
