Bradley Beal will not compete for Team USA after being placed in Olympic team's health and safety protocols earlier this week.

The Wizards star was ruled out from competing in the Tokyo Olympics after being placed in protocol Wednesday night, USA Basketball announced Thursday afternoon.

Team USA did not clarify if Beal tested positive for covid-19, allowing only that he will be unable to compete in the Summer Olympic Games.

Pistons star Jerami Grant was also placed in protocol "out of an abundance of caution."

Team USA is 1-2 in exhibitions so far, with losses to Nigeria and Australia, and its lone win against Argentina on Tuesday, in the run-up to the Olympic Games.

Their exhibition game against Australia scheduled for Friday has been cancelled, also "out of an abundance of caution." Their first game of the Olympics is scheduled for July 25 against France.

UPDATE:

Team USA was dealt another devastating blow on Friday, when Cavs star Kevin Love withdrew his name from Olympic competition, citing his ongoing recovery from a calf injury.

Love won a gold medal with Team USA at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.
