A New York basketball legend is heading back to where his journey began.
According to multiple reports, Knicks ambassador and franchise legend Patrick Ewing is leaving the organization to return courtside as an assistant coach for the Washington Wizards.
Steve Clifford, who was an assistant with Ewing in Orlando and had Patrick as his top assistant while the head coach in Charlotte, will also join the Wizards as a coaching advisor.
Per ESPN, the Wizards ‘value Ewing's presence and legendary stature and his ability to communicate with veteran stars Anthony Davis and Trae Young and their promising young nucleus, led by No. 1 pick AJ Dybantsa.’
Ewing, 63, started his coaching career as a Wizards assistant in 2002-03, then spent four seasons with the Rockets, five with Orlando, and four in Charlotte before landing the head coaching job at his alma mater, Georgetown,
He was the Hoyas’ head man for six seasons before being let go after the 2022-23 season, and he has of late been an ambassador for the franchise that selected him No. 1 overall out of Georgetown in 1985.
