Wes Unseld Jr. will return as head coach of the Washington Wizards for the 2023-24 season.

“He is our coach moving forward,” Wizards president and general manager Tommy Sheppard told The Athletic's Josh Robbins on Tuesday. Unseld Jr. has two seasons remaining on his contract.

Washington, who have been eliminated from playoff contention, stand at 34-45 with three games remaining in the season after going 35-47 in Unseld Jr.'s first year as head coach.

Unseld Jr. succeeded Scott Brooks, who in five years with the Wizards made three trips to the postseason, including a trip to the Eastern Conference Semis after a 49-33 record in 2016-17, his first year on the job. Brooks was fired after the 2020-21 season, despite making a playoff appearance. Brooks' record was 183-207.

Unseld Jr. was hired in part to help fix a fledgling defense, however, the results have not materialized on the court, but part of that can be the lack of solid defensive players.
